Furniture

Swedish antiques work wonderfully in both period and contemporary settings. Most of the furniture is painted the famous ‘Gustavian grey’. Pieces with the original late 18C grey colour intact are rare, most have been repainted at some point during the 19C and 20C. Even so the paint has a lovely quality that is impossible to reproduce over here. This light colouring, together with the understated and elegant design of the pieces means they are easily accommodated in many different room styles.

In addition however I also have some beautiful, richly coloured pieces which originate from the rural tradition. These are particularly valued in Sweden as part of their cultural history and make a lovely statement, particularly combined with paler pieces.

The furniture is almost always made from local pine which, because of the cold Scandinavian climate, is extremely dense. This means not only are the pieces solid and weighty but they have aged beautifully – truly built to last!

The individual pieces are purchased in Sweden from well-established antique experts and I aim to provide as much information about each item as possible down to the part of Sweden it originally came from if this is available.
